The Korean philosophy

Korean acne treatment rejects the Western “nuke it with Accutane” approach in favor of addressing acne at multiple levels: bacterial (LED blue light), structural (extraction and peels), and inflammatory (calming treatments). The philosophy is to create an environment where acne can’t thrive, rather than just killing existing breakouts.

The ritual

1

Skin analysis

20 min

A detailed assessment maps your acne type (comedonal, inflammatory, hormonal), triggers, and current routine. This determines your personalized treatment protocol.

2

Treatment session

50 min

Each session follows a sequence: cleanse, steam, professional extraction (the uncomfortable but effective part), BHA or mandelic acid peel, blue LED therapy (15-20 min), and a calming centella or tea tree mask to reduce redness.

3

Progress check

10 min

Every 2-3 sessions, progress photos are compared and the protocol is adjusted. As active acne clears, the focus shifts from extraction to prevention and barrier repair.

4

Routine optimization

10 min

Your home care routine is refined based on how your skin responds. Products are adjusted to support the in-clinic treatments.

Your first time

The first session starts with a detailed skin analysis — be ready to discuss your history with acne, products you’ve tried, and any medications. The extraction portion is the most uncomfortable part — the esthetician uses sterile tools to clear clogged pores. It’s not fun, but it’s effective. The LED and mask portions are relaxing and calming. You’ll likely leave the first session with some redness from extraction that fades within 24-48 hours. By session 3-4, you’ll start to see real improvement.

When to book

Commit to weekly sessions for at least 4 weeks to see meaningful results. Don’t start right before a major event — the extraction phase can temporarily worsen appearance. Best results come from completing the full 6-8 session program. Start on a low-key week.

Best for

Persistent mild-moderate acneHormonal breakoutsPost-acne rednessClogged pores and blackheadsThose wanting to avoid oral medication

Not recommended for

Severe cystic acne (may need dermatologist intervention first)Active Accutane useThose unable to commit to weekly sessions

East vs West

Western acne treatment often jumps straight to prescription medications (Accutane, antibiotics). Korean clinics first try a structured topical and in-clinic approach that addresses acne through multiple non-systemic modalities. If the program approach works, you avoid the side effects of oral medications entirely.

Aftercare

Follow the prescribed home care routine strictly between sessions. Avoid touching your face. Change pillowcases frequently. SPF daily — acne treatments make skin more photosensitive. Don’t pick at breakouts between sessions — let the esthetician handle extraction.
