$150 for an IPL session that targets sun damage, redness, and broken capillaries simultaneously. That’s less than one dark-spot corrector that takes months to maybe work.
The Korean philosophy
Korean aesthetics treats sun damage and redness as ongoing maintenance concerns, not one-time problems to solve aggressively. IPL in Korean clinics is calibrated at moderate settings done regularly, rather than high-intensity single sessions. The Korean approach: consistent gentle correction outperforms occasional aggressive intervention.
The ritual
Cleansing
5 minYour face is thoroughly cleansed to remove sunscreen, makeup, and oils. Any residue on the skin can scatter the light energy and cause uneven results.
Cool gel application
3 minA clear, cool conducting gel is applied to the treatment area. This protects the skin surface and helps the light penetrate evenly. You’ll put on protective eyewear.
IPL passes
15 minThe IPL handpiece is pressed against your skin and fired in short pulses. Each pulse feels like a rubber band snap accompanied by a bright flash of light (behind your goggles). The practitioner moves systematically across your face, targeting areas with more pigmentation or redness.
Cooling compress
5 minA cold compress or cooling device is applied immediately after treatment. This soothes the skin and reduces any heat sensation from the light pulses.
Calming serum + SPF
5 minA calming centella or aloe serum is applied, followed by mineral SPF. Your skin will be slightly pink but presentable.
Your first time
The room is clinical — more doctor’s office than spa. After cleansing and gel application, you’ll wear protective goggles. The IPL handpiece is placed against your skin and you’ll see flashes of bright light (through closed eyes behind goggles) with each pulse. Each pulse feels like a quick rubber band snap — mildly uncomfortable but very tolerable. Some areas (cheekbones, forehead) are more sensitive than others. The whole treatment takes 20-30 minutes. Afterward, your skin is slightly pink. Within 2-3 days, dark spots will darken noticeably — this means it’s working. They’ll flake off within 5-10 days, revealing clearer skin underneath.
When to book
Book at least 10-14 days before an event — dark spots darken before they fade, and you need time for the flaking process. Plan a series of 3-5 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Never get IPL with a tan — wait at least 4 weeks after sun exposure. Fall and winter are ideal seasons for IPL.

East vs West
The technology is identical, but Korean clinics treat IPL as affordable routine maintenance done every 4-6 weeks. Western clinics charge 2-3x more and position it as an occasional medical procedure. Korean protocols often combine IPL with other treatments in the same session for comprehensive results.
Aftercare
SPF 50+ is absolutely mandatory for 2 weeks. Dark spots will darken before they flake off — do not pick at them. Avoid retinol, acids, and hot showers for 3-5 days. Use gentle, hydrating products only.
