Western
$450 for a PDO thread lift at Korean clinics. The same procedure at a Western med-spa runs $1,500-3,000. And a surgical facelift? $10,000-20,000. Threads are the sweet spot of results-to-cost ratio.
The Korean philosophy
Korean thread lifting represents the middle ground between topical treatments and surgery. For people who want visible lifting without going under the knife, PDO threads offer a minimally invasive option that fits the Korean aesthetic of natural-looking improvement. Korean clinics pioneered many thread lifting techniques and remain global leaders in thread innovation.
The ritual
Face analysis and marking
10 minThe practitioner marks the insertion points and direction of thread placement based on your facial anatomy and sagging patterns. The plan is drawn directly on your face. Photos are taken for comparison.
Local anesthesia
10 minLocal anesthetic (lidocaine) is injected at the entry points and along the thread pathways. This numbs the area completely. You’ll feel the initial anesthetic pinch, then nothing.
Thread insertion
15 minFine needles or cannulas carrying PDO threads are inserted along the marked pathways. You’ll feel pressure and movement but minimal pain thanks to the anesthesia. Barbed threads are placed for lifting areas; smooth threads are placed for collagen stimulation.
Adjustment and positioning
5 minThe practitioner gently adjusts the threads to achieve the desired lift. The barbed threads are anchored, and excess thread is trimmed at the insertion point. You’ll be shown the immediate results in a mirror.
Post-care
5 minIce packs are applied. You receive detailed aftercare instructions: avoid wide mouth opening, chewing gum, and sleeping face-down for 2 weeks. The entry points are covered with small bandages.
Your first time
Thread lifting is more involved than injectables but far less than surgery. After thorough numbing, you’ll feel pressure and movement under your skin as threads are placed — an odd sensation but not painful. The whole insertion process takes 15-20 minutes. Immediately after, you’ll see visible lifting — expect to look a few years younger in the mirror. However, you’ll also have swelling and tenderness for 3-7 days. Your face may feel tight, and wide mouth movements (yawning, big bites of food) will be uncomfortable for 1-2 weeks. By 2-3 weeks, you’ll feel normal. The results continue improving for 3 months as collagen builds around the threads.
When to book
Book at least 3-4 weeks before any event. The initial swelling resolves in a week, but full settling takes 2-3 weeks. Results peak at 3 months and last 1-2 years. Plan a maintenance treatment every 12-18 months. Avoid intense exercise for 1 week after. No facial massages for 4 weeks.

East vs West
Korean clinics pioneered PDO thread lifting and remain the global innovation leaders. Korean practitioners typically use more threads for a more comprehensive result — 10-20+ threads versus the 4-6 often used in Western clinics. Korean techniques combine barbed and smooth threads strategically, while Western providers often use only one type. The price difference (60-70% less) reflects Korea’s higher procedure volume and specialization.
Aftercare
Sleep on your back for 2 weeks. Avoid wide mouth opening, chewing gum, and dental work for 2 weeks. No facial massage for 4 weeks. No intense exercise for 1 week. Ice the area 10 minutes on/10 minutes off for the first 48 hours to reduce swelling. If you feel a sharp poking sensation, contact your practitioner.
