Picosecond lasers shatter pigment without heat damage. In Korea, it’s routine. In the West, it’s a major procedure.

$200 per session for pico laser. A full series of 5 sessions costs $1,000 at a Korean clinic — versus $2,000-4,000 at a Western dermatologist for the same number of sessions.
The Korean philosophy
Korean dermatology treats pigmentation as an ongoing management issue rather than a one-time fix. Regular gentle pico sessions prevent pigment from accumulating, rather than waiting until dark spots are severe enough to require aggressive treatment. Prevention over correction — the core K-beauty principle applied to clinical care.
The ritual
Skin cleansing
5 minThorough cleansing removes all products. Any residue on the skin can absorb laser energy unevenly and cause hot spots.
Protective eyewear
2 minOpaque metal eye shields are placed over your eyes. The pico laser wavelengths are not safe for unprotected eyes.
Laser treatment
10-20 minThe practitioner targets pigmented areas with the pico handpiece. Each pulse feels like a tiny snap — sharper than laser toning but very brief. Dark spots may temporarily turn white (frosting) — this is normal and means the pigment is shattering.
Cooling + calming serum
5 minCold air or ice packs soothe the treated skin. A centella or growth factor serum is applied to accelerate healing and reduce inflammation.
SPF application
2 minA high-protection mineral SPF is applied. Sun protection is absolutely critical post-treatment to prevent new pigment formation while old pigment clears.
Your first time
You’ll sit in a clinical treatment room. After cleansing and eye shields, the practitioner targets your dark spots with a pen-like device. Each pulse makes a sharp snapping sound and feels like a tiny rubber band flick — more noticeable on bony areas like the cheekbones. Treatment takes 15-30 minutes. Afterward, the treated spots look slightly darker or reddish — this is expected and fades over 2-3 days. Some spots may have tiny scabs that flake off naturally within a week, revealing lighter skin underneath. It’s more intense than laser toning but still very manageable.
When to book
Book at least 1 week before any event due to temporary redness and darkening of spots. Plan your series for fall/winter when sun exposure is minimal. Strictly avoid tanning for 2 weeks before and 4 weeks after each session. Space sessions 4-6 weeks apart for optimal pigment clearance between treatments.

East vs West
Same technology, completely different treatment culture. Korean clinics position pico laser as routine maintenance — a series of 3-6 sessions done seasonally. Western clinics treat each session as a standalone procedure with a premium price. Korean clinics also tend to use more conservative settings with more frequent sessions, aligning with the low-and-slow philosophy that reduces side effects.
Aftercare
SPF 50+ is non-negotiable for 4+ weeks. Avoid retinol, AHA, BHA for 5-7 days. Use gentle centella or snail mucin products to support healing. Dark spots may look worse before they look better — this is the pigment coming to the surface before flaking off.
