$80/session for a gua sha facial. That’s less than one jade roller and serum set from Goop — and a professional does in 45 minutes what you’d struggle to achieve at home in a month.

The Korean philosophy

Korean and Chinese beauty traditions have always understood that healthy skin starts with healthy circulation. Gua sha is based on the principle that stagnant lymph and poor blood flow cause puffiness, dullness, and premature aging. By manually moving fluid and stimulating circulation, you’re not adding anything to your skin — you’re helping it function the way it’s supposed to.

The ritual

1

Double cleanse

7 min

A thorough oil and water cleanse creates a perfectly clean canvas. Any residue can cause the gua sha stone to drag unevenly, which reduces effectiveness and can irritate the skin.

2

Facial oil application

3 min

A generous layer of facial oil (typically camellia, jojoba, or rosehip) is applied to create slip. The stone needs to glide smoothly — too much friction pulls at the skin instead of moving fluid. The oil also delivers nutrients as the gua sha pushes it deeper.

3

Gua sha sculpting massage

20 min

The main event. The esthetician uses firm, sweeping strokes with the stone along your jawline, cheekbones, forehead, and neck. Each stroke follows a specific lymphatic pathway — always moving toward drainage points near the ears and neck. The pressure is firm but not painful. You’ll feel fluid moving under your skin. Some people can feel (and hear) gentle crackling as tension releases.

4

Acupressure point work

8 min

The pointed edge of the gua sha stone is used to press specific acupressure points — between the brows, at the temples, along the jawline. Each point corresponds to tension release and energy flow. You’ll feel deep, satisfying pressure that melts away tightness.

5

Sheet mask

12 min

A hydrating sheet mask locks in the facial oil and allows the skin to absorb all the nutrients pushed deeper by the gua sha. Your face is already noticeably more sculpted and less puffy at this point.

6

Moisturizer + SPF

5 min

A light moisturizer and SPF finish the treatment. Your skin is glowing from increased circulation and your facial contours look sharper.

Your first time

You’ll lie on a treatment bed while the esthetician cleanses your face and applies a generous layer of oil. The gua sha stone feels cool and smooth against your skin. The esthetician uses firm, sweeping motions — always in one direction, always following the contours of your face. It’s not painful, but the pressure is firmer than a typical facial massage. Some strokes along the jawline feel particularly satisfying if you carry tension there. The whole thing takes 45-60 minutes. When you sit up and look in the mirror, the difference is visible — your face looks lifted, less puffy, and more defined. It’s the most immediately gratifying treatment for facial sculpting.

When to book

Perfect the morning of or the day before an event for maximum depuffing. The lifting effect is most dramatic in the first 24-48 hours. For lasting results, commit to every 2-4 weeks for at least 3 months. Great after a long flight or a night of poor sleep. Avoid immediately after Botox or fillers — wait at least 2 weeks.

Best for

Not recommended for

East vs West

Western lymphatic facials often use machines or manual massage without tools. Korean and Chinese gua sha facials use traditional stone tools with centuries of technique behind them. The stone’s firmness and shape allow more precise pressure along facial contours than fingers alone. Korean clinics also spend 2-3x longer on the actual massage portion.

Aftercare

Drink extra water for 24 hours to support lymphatic drainage. Avoid alcohol and salty foods the evening of your treatment — they’ll undo the depuffing. Your normal skincare routine is fine immediately after.
